Why I Decided to Board Up My Cupboards

I was praying for several personal needs on my heart as well as being burdened for others. I felt such empathy for the people in my life and the struggles we were all facing. Looking at all of those things around me, I began to feel overwhelmed and in many of the situations I couldn’t see how these things would ever be resolved. I wanted to see my way out. One situation being the large medical bills that began arriving in the mail from my recent hospitalization. I was praying, calculating, and fretting. I was working towards trusting God, but it was a process that was taking time.

As I continued to pray God in his kindness and nearness showed me a picture. I saw my cupboard. It is narrow and one cereal box deep. When I looked inside there were a few items sitting on the shelves and the Lord spoke to me, “You’re right. Things do look hopeless if this is your way out. That is what your ability to fix things looks like. It is limited. It is small and sparse. I am inviting you to stop looking at your cupboard and reach into mine.” I then saw an expanse of space with no borders. No limits. No beginning and no end. He spoke to me,”You may not know where the solutions will come from, but I do. You may not know how, but I do. Start your prayers there.”

It was a challenge for me to stop trying to solve these issues with what I could see, what I knew and what I could comprehend; in other words, faithlessness.  It was time for faith mode; looking outside of myself and my own ability. Casting off self-sufficiency and looking to Him as my most important source.

Philippians 4:6, Be anxious about nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. Accomplishing this is no easy task but one by one I began to supplicate or transfer the needs to him, because I realized that I couldn’t solve my way out of the problems.

Hebrews 11:6 says, And it is impossible to please God without faith. Faith is a crucial part of the believer’s life and relationship with God. It is the bridge that gets us from our need to our needs being met. It isn’t a substitute for wisdom and good decisions but it is a foundation in the struggles of life.

You see, I can still choose to use my cupboard for provision, but I am going to only be able to provide what is in my ability. Jobs change, bank accounts drain, circumstances are unreliable, there is nothing constant except for problems and Jesus.

He is inviting us to depend more on Him, to believe for better than we can provide and to tap into His unlimited resources. An invitation to simply trust and be a person of faith.

If you are in a situation now where your only option is God, consider yourself blessed. Take this opportunity to strengthen your faith muscle and watch Him take care of you.

I am so glad I did this. Four weeks after I received those medical bills, 5 zeros deep, through a series of perfectly aligned details and miracles, God made a way for this self-pay patient to not owe one penny towards those bills.

With God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26

Yeah, I was schooled, humbled, corrected……So, get some boards, nails, and a hammer and join me in boarding up our cupboards once and for all. God has some miracles lined up for you and me.

  1. Thank you for sharing your story. We have all been there trying to do things in our own ability. We try to live victoriously within limited means by doing things our own way instead of God’s way. You have reminded us that when we truly walk by faith, it works and provision comes. God is true and He has given us His Word. He will provide for all of our needs according to His ( unlimited ) riches in Glory through Christ Jesus.
